What’s included

Cabinet painting services we offer

Viora Painting paints kitchen, bathroom, laundry and built-in cabinets in Katy, TX. Cabinets are touched, bumped and wiped every day, so they get more prep and a harder coating than walls: a bonding primer for adhesion, a cabinet-grade finish that cures hard, and slow, careful work because every drip shows at arm’s length.

Kitchen cabinets
Doors, drawer fronts, face frames and end panels, with interiors and shelves included if you want them.
Kitchen islands and two-tone kitchens
A contrasting island color, or lighter uppers with darker lowers, chosen to work with your countertops and floors.
Bathroom vanities
Vanities get the same clean, prime and finish process as kitchens, with a coating that stands up to bathroom humidity.
Laundry, wet bar and built-ins
Laundry-room cabinets, wet bars, bookcases, built-in desks and entertainment centers.
Oak grain filling
Optional for open-grain wood like oak, for a smooth, furniture-like finish instead of visible grain texture.

Our process

How we paint cabinets, step by step

Eight steps, and most of them happen before any color goes on.

  1. Walkthrough and estimateWe look at the cabinet material and condition, count doors and drawers, and send an itemized written estimate.
  2. Remove and labelDoors, drawer fronts and hardware come off, and every piece is labeled so it goes back exactly where it came from.
  3. Protect the kitchenCountertops, floors, appliances and backsplash are covered, and cabinet interiors are masked unless they are being painted.
  4. Clean and degreaseKitchen cabinets carry a film of cooking grease, especially near the range. Paint will not stay on it, so every surface is thoroughly degreased.
  5. Scuff and repairSurfaces are scuff-sanded or deglossed so primer can grip. Dings and gouges are filled, and grain is filled where you have chosen it.
  6. PrimeA bonding primer suited to the existing finish goes on first. Stain-blocking primer is used where wood tannins or old stains could bleed through.
  7. Finish coatsA durable cabinet-grade coating goes on in thin, even coats. Doors and drawer fronts are finished separately from the cabinet boxes.
  8. Reinstall and adjustOnce the coating can be handled, doors and drawers are rehung, hardware reinstalled and hinges adjusted so everything lines up.

Paint, reface or replace?

Painting vs. refacing vs. replacing cabinets

If your cabinet boxes are solid, painting is usually the best value. Here is how the three options compare.

Usually a good candidate for painting

  • Solid wood or MDF doors and boxes
  • A layout you plan to keep
  • Dated stain or builder-grade finish in sound condition

Usually not a good candidate

  • Peeling thermofoil or delaminating laminate
  • Swollen or water-damaged particleboard
  • A kitchen that will be reconfigured soon

Finish & color

Decisions to make before we start

Sheen
Satin is the most common choice: easy to clean, with a soft glow. Semi-gloss is shinier and slightly tougher but shows every imperfection in the doors.
Color
Whites and off-whites vary a lot in undertone. Test them next to your countertop and backsplash, under your own lighting, before deciding.
Hardware
Your existing knobs, pulls and hinges are removed for painting and put back afterwards. Our work is painting only; we do not supply or install new hardware.

Local know-how

What we see in Katy-area kitchens

Builder stock cabinets
Many kitchens in newer Katy-area homes still have the builder’s stained cabinets: solid boxes with a dated finish. They are ideal candidates for painting.
Oak and its grain
Oak cabinets are common in homes from the 1990s and 2000s. The grain shows through paint unless it is filled, so we explain both looks before you decide.
Humidity and cure time
Cabinet coatings feel dry quickly but take weeks to fully harden, and humidity slows that. Gentle use during the first few weeks keeps the finish looking new.
White kitchens and granite
Whites and off-whites shift a lot next to granite and quartz with warm or cool undertones. We recommend testing samples under your own kitchen lighting.

Cost

How much does cabinet painting cost in Katy?

Cabinet painting is priced on the work involved, not a flat rate per kitchen, and usually costs far less than new cabinets. After a walkthrough, your free written estimate lists every piece and step.

What affects the price

  • Number of doors, drawer fronts and panels
  • Whether cabinet interiors and shelves are included
  • Condition of the existing finish: peeling, water damage, heavy grease
  • Grain filling on oak or other open-grain wood
  • Going from a dark color to white or a light color
  • Glass-front doors, crown molding, decorative panels and islands

How to compare painting quotes

Two quotes for the same house can differ a lot because they do not cover the same work. Before you compare prices, check that each quote:

  • Every room or surface being painted is listed
  • Prep and repairs are spelled out, not just "prep included"
  • The paint brand, product line and sheen are named
  • The number of coats for each surface is written down
  • Furniture moving, protection and cleanup are covered
  • Anything excluded, such as major drywall or wood repair, is clear

Our written estimates include all of these, so you can compare them line by line.

Questions

Cabinet painting FAQ

How much does cabinet painting cost in Katy?

Cabinet painting is priced on the number of doors, drawer fronts and panels, whether interiors are included, the condition of the existing finish, and any grain filling. It usually costs far less than replacing cabinets. After a walkthrough you get a free written estimate that lists every piece and step.

How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets?

Most kitchens take one to two weeks from removing the doors to rehanging them, depending on the number of pieces, repairs, grain filling and drying conditions. You can usually still use the kitchen with some care during the project. Your estimate includes the expected schedule.

Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?

Yes, usually by a wide margin, because you keep the existing boxes, doors and countertops. If the cabinets are solid and you like the layout, painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to update a kitchen. If the layout is changing or the boxes are damaged, replacement is the better investment.

What is the difference between cabinet painting and cabinet refinishing?

Refinishing is a general term for updating the existing finish, either by restaining or by painting. Painting covers the wood with an opaque cabinet-grade coating and allows any color. If you want to keep a stained wood look, mention it; restaining is a different process and is not always possible over the existing finish.

How long until I can use my kitchen normally?

You can usually use the kitchen with some care while work is in progress, though contents of the cabinets being worked on are inaccessible for a while. Cabinet coatings feel dry quickly but take longer to fully harden. Treat doors gently for the first few weeks: avoid hanging damp towels on them and clean with a soft cloth.

Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?

Sometimes, with the right primer. Thermofoil that is peeling or bubbling is not a good candidate, because the coating is only as stable as the foil under it. We will look at your cabinets and tell you honestly whether painting makes sense.

Will the wood grain show through the paint?

On open-grain woods such as oak, yes. The texture stays visible under paint unless the grain is filled first. Grain filling adds labor, so we explain the difference and let you choose. Maple and MDF have little visible grain.

Do I need to empty my cabinets?

If the interiors or the face frames near the shelves are being painted, yes. If only the exteriors are being painted, we will tell you which cabinets need to be cleared.

Can you match a specific color or do a two-tone kitchen?

Yes. A common combination is lighter perimeter cabinets with a darker or contrasting island. Bring your color ideas to the walkthrough and we will talk through sheen and how the colors will work with your countertops.

Do you paint bathroom vanities and built-ins too?

Yes. Bathroom vanities, laundry-room cabinets, bookcases, built-in desks and entertainment centers go through the same clean, scuff, prime and finish process as kitchen cabinets. They can be done on their own or added to a kitchen project.
